In this post I will deal with 2 common questions:

1. Is it legal to buy generic medications online (including from 4rx)?
2. Is it legal to buy medications without prescription, and why?

Lets say you live in the US and you want to order a generic medication online that arrives from India to your local post office. Is that illegal?

No! unless there is a strict law that forbids that, you have the right to choose which medications to use. It’s a fact that thousands of people are ordering generic medications online every day that pass customs without any problem.

So, what is illegal?

1. Buying, using or trading narcotic drugs, or any drugs that are illegal by law.
2. Ordering a commercial quantity of medications, or trading them.

I was looking for info about the legal issue for a long time, and could not find any law that prohibits buying generic meds online. The only thing I found are warnings. The FDA is warning against the dangers of buying generic drugs online, but there is no enforcement against the purchase of medications for personal use. The authorities are fighting against narcotics and against smugglers of commercial quantities. Yes,  you should be very careful about who you buy from, but you are not breaking the law.

4rx sells generic drugs without prescription, is that legal?

Yes! basically, a prescription has 2 goals:

1. Regulate the market, allowing sales to be made by certified pharmacies only.
2. Protect the public’s health, you can get the medication only if prescribed by a certified doctor who examined you. This prevents people from getting medications they don’t really need.

Some will say that there are other reasons related to politics, lobbying, and the influence of the big pharmaceutical companies,  and that the considerations are not always pure, it’s up to you to take a stand in this issue, I assume the main goal is public safety.

As long as you didn’t get your medication from a local doctor, no prescription should be involved. Technically you can’t visit a doctor who will prescribe such a generic medication to you, as it is not sold in the your territory, so you are not breaking any rule. Also – you are not buying the medication from a registered pharmacy that must accept prescription as a pre-condition.

And finally – why? Why is there no enforcement against the purchase of generic medications online if the FDA so strongly warns against them?

The reasons are mainly economical situation and health insurance. In the US alone, millions of people do not have health insurance, and can’t afford the treatments prices not to mention a visit to a doctor. Many people who do have medical insurance can’t afford the medical expenses that are not covered under the insurance – and buy generic medications. There is no solution for this problem yet,  and the authorities can’t stop people buying cheap medications before this issue is solved.

Conclusion – you can buy generic meds online but you must exercise common sense and be prudent when it comes to your health. It is highly recommended that you visit your doctor, get advice, and get prescription for the original drug even if you plan to get the generic version online and don’t need the prescription.
